About Us

Masjid Haji Mohd Salleh (Geylang), or MHMS, has served the Muslim community on Geylang Road for more than 125 years. This is our story.

Our mission

To be an inclusive Islamic institution that promotes a compassionate society.

Our vision

Building a progressive mosque that embraces diversity.

Our history

1896

The beginning

Haji Mohd Salleh bin Ally founded the mosque on 16 May 1896, on a piece of land that belonged to Vena Meena Bok. He cared for it together with his children, relatives and close family friends.

1939–1959

Hard years and renewal

During the Japanese Occupation the mosque came close to being abandoned. The family worked to preserve it on its wakaf land, and after a court order was obtained, reconstruction began on 4 October 1959. The rebuilt mosque resembled a traditional kampung house.

1968

Under MUIS

When Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) was formed in 1968 to oversee mosques in Singapore, a group of volunteers formed the Lembaga Pentadbir Masjid (Mosque Management Board) to run MHMS.

1989–1999

A new mosque

In 1989 the board resolved to raise funds through charity and sponsorships to rebuild the mosque on the same wakaf ground. Demolition and rebuilding began on 26 July 1998, and after 16 months of works the new four-storey mosque at 245 Geylang Road officially opened on 5 November 1999.

2014–2015

Upgrading

From January 2014 to January 2015, the mosque was upgraded with a new lift and improved toilets and ablution areas on level 1, so that both young and elderly congregants can use the mosque more easily. The $650,000 works were funded through contributions from the community.

Today

Iman, Ilmu, Ihsan, Islah

MHMS continues to provide religious education for young and old, social support for residents around Geylang, and a welcoming place of prayer for all.
